GB, Color, or Advance: if it fits in a pocket, it’s probably on the buy list.

The Game Boy, briefly.

The original Game Boy launched in Japan on April 21, 1989 (an initial shipment of 300,000 units sold out in two weeks), then in North America that July 31, where it sold 40,000 units on day one and passed a million within weeks. A lot of that early US momentum came down to one swap: Nintendo dropped the puzzle game Yakuman, planned as the Japanese pack-in, in favor of bundling Tetris instead, which showed off the system’s portability without needing color graphics to make its case. Game Boy Color followed in October 1998, and the 32-bit Game Boy Advance arrived in March 2001, three handheld generations, one continuous family.

The combined original Game Boy and Game Boy Color line sold roughly 118.69 million units worldwide before Nintendo moved fully to Advance, which went on to sell another 81.51 million units on its own. Pokémon Red/Blue, Tetris, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, and later The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap and Golden Sun carried the family’s biggest moments across all three hardware generations.

The Game Boy’s reputation for surviving almost anything isn’t just marketing: a Game Boy that was inside a US Army barracks bombed during the Gulf War came out scorched and warped, casing melted, motherboard exposed, and still booted a Tetris cartridge when technicians tested it. Nintendo kept that exact unit on display in its New York store for over three decades. That’s the upper bound, not the average; most units sellers find won’t have survived an actual bombing. But it’s a real data point for why a battered-looking Game Boy is still worth testing before writing it off, and why completeness, original box, manual, link cable, is what actually separates a strong sale from an average one on a system this durable.
