SNES is the heart of the buy list: one of the highest-demand retro systems we buy and a CT Picker specialty.

The Super Nintendo, briefly.

Nintendo’s second home console launched in Japan as the Super Famicom on November 21, 1990, designed by Masayuki Uemura, the same engineer behind the original NES. Uemura’s team originally wanted the SNES backward-compatible with NES cartridges, a feature cut before launch, and built the system around a deliberately modest CPU (slower than Sega’s Genesis) in exchange for a 32,000-color palette and Mode 7, the scaling-and-rotation trick that faked 3D depth on 2D sprites and became the console’s signature flex. Nintendo of America’s in-house designer Lance Barr redesigned the Japanese unit for the US release, since he felt the original "had a kind of bag-of-bread look": squaring off the case and giving it concave controller buttons after the original NES had drawn complaints about spilled drinks running into its top vents.

The Super NES reached North America on August 23, 1991, nearly two years after Sega’s Genesis had already staked out the market, and still went on to outsell it. Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, and Chrono Trigger all launched here and still anchor "greatest games ever" lists three decades later. Worldwide, the SNES sold roughly 49.1 million units, about 23.35 million of those in the Americas.

SNES cartridges hold up physically better than the NES generation before them, but value still splits hard by title. Platformers and sports games from this era are common and cheap; the RPGs are where the money is: Chrono Trigger and EarthBound both had modest print runs relative to demand, and that gap between supply and want is exactly what keeps their resale numbers high today.
