Nintendo’s dual-screen handheld launched in the US on November 21, 2004, then in Japan that December 2, with Australia and Europe following into early 2005. Nintendo initially pitched it as a "third pillar" alongside its home and portable lines rather than a Game Boy Advance successor, a hedge that confused industry watchers at the time and read like a safety net in case the dual-screen, touch-driven concept didn’t land. It didn’t help that Sony’s PlayStation Portable, announced around the same time, looked like the more impressive piece of hardware on paper.

The skepticism didn’t hold up. Early touch-driven titles like Zoo Keeper, Meteos, and Yoshi Touch & Go showed off gameplay a single-screen handheld genuinely couldn’t replicate, and the DS Lite redesign about a year later fixed the original model’s clunky design and pushed sales even higher. Across the original DS, DS Lite, and DSi, the system sold more than 154 million units, making it the best-selling handheld console of all time and the third-best-selling console of any kind, behind only the PS2 and the Switch.

With sales that high, most DS software is common and inexpensive today. The real value sits in the games that actually needed the dual-screen or touch-stylus format to work and never got ported anywhere else, Trauma Center and Professor Layton’s hand-drawn puzzle interactions are good examples, plus anything that shipped in smaller numbers during the system’s long, decade-spanning tail.
