Sell your Xbox One games for cash.

A rough launch, a strong back half of the library: the games are worth real money regardless.

The Xbox One, briefly.

Microsoft’s third home console launched on November 22, 2013, at $499, a price that bundled a required Kinect 2.0 sensor with every unit on top of an "always-online" connectivity requirement Microsoft had announced at reveal. Both drew enough backlash that Microsoft reversed the always-online policy and dropped the mandatory-Kinect rule before the console even reached store shelves, and the reveal presentation’s heavy emphasis on "TV" over games didn’t help the impression that Microsoft was solving a different problem than the one its customers actually had.

The reversal didn’t fully undo the damage: a Kinect-free $400 SKU released in June 2014 more than doubled the console’s monthly sales the moment it arrived, which says plenty about how much that bundle had been weighing it down at full price. Looking back, some of the original vision wasn’t wrong, just early: an all-in-one entertainment box and a disc-as-license model both describe how people use consoles today, minus the parts that triggered the 2013 backlash. Halo 5: Guardians, Forza Horizon 3, Sea of Thieves, Ori and the Blind Forest, and Cuphead carried the back half of the generation, and lifetime sales landed somewhere in the 50-million range, trailing the PS4 for the system’s entire run.

Because the Xbox One never built the install base its competitors did, certain exclusives and lower-print titles from this generation carry real scarcity value today. A complete original $499 Kinect bundle has its own curiosity-piece status too: it’s a physical artifact of the exact policy reversal that defined the console’s launch, not just another accessory in the box.
