The Xbox, briefly.
Microsoft’s first home console launched in North America on November 15, 2001, born out of a small internal DirectX team’s pitch and a fair amount of industry skepticism that a software company could actually build hardware. It was the first console with a built-in hard drive, ran on an Intel CPU and Nvidia GPU instead of custom silicon, and used Ethernet instead of a dial-up modem, a bet on broadband that looked early at the time and obvious in hindsight.
Halo: Combat Evolved was the launch title that made the bet pay off, passing 1 million copies sold by April 2002 and helping push 1.5 million consoles out the door before 2001 was even over. Xbox Live followed in November 2002 and turned online console multiplayer from a niche feature into the standard every competitor eventually copied. Lifetime sales landed at 24 million units, a real underdog result next to the PS2’s dominance, but the template it set, onboard storage, broadband-first networking, downloadable content, is the one every console since has followed.
Because the original Xbox undersold its generation, the back half of its library shipped in smaller numbers than PS2-era equivalents, which keeps resale values steady on titles that didn’t get the same print runs. The bulky original "Duke" controller is its own story: it was widely mocked at launch (Game Informer literally named it "Blunder of the Year") and replaced within months by the smaller Controller S, but a complete, working Duke has since become a nostalgia piece worth more today than its reputation back then would suggest.
