Sony’s fourth home console launched in the US and Canada on November 15, 2013, priced at $399, a clean $100 under the Xbox One’s $499 launch price, a gap that widened once Microsoft’s planned always-online check-in and game-licensing restrictions drew a backlash Sony mocked directly at E3 with an ad showing executives literally handing a disc to each other, no restrictions attached. Microsoft reversed both policies before launch, but the damage to the narrative was already done. Under the hood, the PS4 dropped the PS3’s custom Cell processor for a more conventional PC-like architecture, making it a far easier platform for third-party studios to build for.

The combination of the price gap and the easier development target showed up directly in sales: PS4 outsold Xbox One for essentially its entire run and closed out its generation as the dominant console of the era. Bloodborne, Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, God of War (2018), and The Last of Us Part II anchor a library still considered one of the strongest of any console generation. Lifetime sales landed around 117 million units, making the PS4 the second-best-selling PlayStation console ever, behind only the PS2.

Wired’s Chris Kohler argued at launch that there was "an excellent chance the PlayStation 4 will be the last videogame console ever, at least as we understand the term," a prediction about the platform-versus-hardware shift that looks more right than wrong a decade on. For sellers, the practical version of that shift shows up in scarcity: because the install base was so large and the games are relatively recent, most PS4 software is common and inexpensive right now, but this was the generation physical media started becoming optional rather than default, so sealed or lower-print copies of the system’s best-regarded titles are starting to carry a premium that didn’t exist when the console was current.
